Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18 – 25, holds a special place in our community’s heart. Throughout the week – from the hymns we sing, to the liturgical readings we hear, the intercessions we voice, and even our mealtime blessings – we join the international Church in grateful prayer for our unity in Christ, as well as in hopeful prayer for an ever-deepening expression of that unity, in Him.
Serving as a strong antidote to our world’s strife, this year’s theme is found in St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians: “There is one body, and one spirit, just as you are called to the one hope of your calling” (Eph 4:4). As our Trappist brother Fr. Louis Thomas Merton put it, “We are already one. But we imagine that we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be is what we are.”
